My Standing Desk

Several of you have asked about the components of my standing desk, so I thought I’d share them with you.

A couple of quick notes:
I’m embarrassed about my cable management. Need to clean that up.
I should’ve taken the trash out before taking the photo.
Some of the links below are amazon affiliate links. You don’t get charged any extra, but if you buy through them, I make a little extra cash.

IKEA Sit/Stand Desk
They say that sitting all day is bad for you. So, sometimes I stand up. Not as much as I should though. This desk is inexpensive for a sit/stand desk, but it comes with a 2-year warranty, so the craftsmanship can’t be too bad. I’ve had mine for more than two years and have had no problems. I have a second one that I use in another office and have had no problems with it either. I probably move it up or down at least once per day. The mechanism is motorized. The only small thing I don’t love about it is it doesn’t have memory positions like the more expensive desks do.

LeatherPlus Drafting Stool
You might be asking, “why do you need a chair for a standing desk?” Sometimes I get tired of standing and want to sit down (okay…in reality it’s most of the time). The desk goes all the way to a standard desk chair height, so I’m not sure why I went with a drafting height chair, but somehow it makes me feel more productive even when I’m sitting. The one I purchased was just an inexpensive one I found on Amazon, but it has held up nicely.

Thunderbolt Dock
This was one of those things that I hesitated on ordering for a long time because it made me feel lazy. I mean, come on…is it really that hard to plug in 3 or 4 cables to the side of your laptop computer when you sit down each day? But, now that I have it I don’t know how I ever made it without it. Aside from drastically reducing the number of things I have to plug in, it also serves as a powered charging hub, and for some reason my laptop’s display and speakers don’t get jacked up when I switch from laptop mode to desk-with-external-monitor mode. If you use any external peripherals with your laptop, this dock is a must-have!

Laptop Stand
This is pretty non-essential, but I like having my laptop screen at the same height as my external display.

Dell 27″ Ultrasharp Monitor
The link for this one is the newer version than what is displayed in the photo above. I luuuvvvee this monitor. It took me a while to figure out the Thunderbolt to DisplayPort cable that is needed for it (at least it was needed for my model when I purchased it 5 or so years ago). But I love the image quality, the amount of real estate, etc. Some people are dual monitor kinds of folks (and, I guess I technically am as well if you count my laptop screen), but I’m a fan of one huge monitor instead.

Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable
I’m not sure if this is needed on the newer model of the Dell monitor since it has HDMI support, but on mine I couldn’t get the resolution and aspect ratio to work correctly without it. I almost lost my mind. Turns out, a little $9 cable fixed it all.

Bose Companion 2 Speakers
I do just enough video work that I need some speakers that are better than the basic Logitech computer speakers, but not so much video work that I need studio monitors. So, I went with the Bose Companion 2. I like the sound…but I’m not an audiophile, so make your own decision.

Blue Yeti Microphone
Again, I do just enough video calls that I need a decent microphone, but I’m not a podcast host or anything so nothing crazy needed. I find the Yeti does the job for me.

File Cabinet
Got to have somewhere to put your stuff.

As you can see from the chart below, this setup isn’t super cheap…but compared to other standing desk solutions, it’s not crazy expensive either. I hope it help you in your grand desk setup pursuits.
